There’s a new strain of HIV that”s been discovered in Guinea-Bissau (West Africa).
It’s more aggressive than the other two major strains and causes a rapid progression from HIV+ to AIDS according to the researchers at Lund University (Sweden)
Instead of around 7 years it takes around 5 years to develop AIDS.
HIV has two major types (1 and 2) but there are different sub-types and even within the course of an infection the virus can mutate. There are probably more recombinants that we still haven’t discovered.
However it’s not all bad news. The current regimen of drugs will still treat it as effectively and that all medicines available will continue to treat it.
A person goes from having HIV to AIDS when his or her white CD4 cell count, a white bloodcell that helps fight infection, drops below 200. It is estimated that around 36 million people today are HIV positive. Still, the biggest causes of death are pneumonia, tuberculosis, diarrhoea, tumours, mycosis and infections.

It’s simple. If every HIV patient had this the quality of their life would improve dramatically. It may be a death sentence but just not today.
And I write this because a lot of Indians have asked me about it.
It doesn’t spread by water or by sharing a drink or spoons unless you have REALLY bad gum disease (like weeping open wounds). You can’t really get it by a hug or a kiss. It cannot jump that easily.
This is a preventable and controllable disease.
